Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a U.S. city, which is the capital of a state that belonged to Mexico until 1845 when it became one of the 50 states. We are talking about Austin, Texas. The city was founded in 1838 with the name Waterloo and a year later it changed its name in honor of Stephen F. Austin, considered the “father of Texas.” It has a population close to 1 million inhabitants while its metropolitan area, which bears the same name, has a population of almost 2 million inhabitants.
The city functions as the seat of the state government, but it is also an important commercial, educational and convention center. Its main productions have to do with technology, since many electronic equipment, semiconductors and computer equipment are developed in this city.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Austin have an average cost of $250 and even though you can find direct flights, most of them have one layover. The best way to get around Austin is by renting a car. The city has a bus system with buses leaving every 15 minutes and can take you to some of the most important places, including the airport, but there are not many bus lines and they do not go everywhere. Taxi service is also another good option to get around if you do not want to drive during your trip. Lodging in a 3-star hotel is a little higher than the average but the quality of the hotels compensates it with an average cost of $80 per night and in a 5-star hotel for $150 a night. As far as gastronomy is concerned, Austin is very popular as most of the Texan cities, for their excellent cuts of meat since they have the best quality cattle in the country, in addition to the highly adapted Tex-Mex style (mixture of Texan food with Mexican food), make this city an exquisite place to enjoy good steaks. The average cost of a meal is $17.
The places and/or activities that you should not miss during your next visit to Austin are the following:
*Capitol: one of the biggest in the country. It is located in the heart of the city. It was built in 1888 and is of neo-Renaissance style. It has a huge dome that in its highest part has a statue of the Goddess of Freedom. Inside, you can find various exhibitions that will help you immerse yourself in the history of Texas over several hundred years. It has a movie theater, souvenir shop, a cafeteria and much more. Also, if you decide to take a tour, you can get to know the beautiful and large gardens that surround it as well as the beautiful mansion of the Governor. Without a doubt it is an excellent site for good postcard-style photographs. The tours are free but you must book them in advance by phone.
*Congress Bridge Bats: a natural spectacle that happens between April and October. These are the bats of the Congress Bridge, which live under it, and between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. form a huge cloud of over a million mouse-tail bats that go out to look for food. You can see this curious event from the sidewalk, a boat or kayak, or from one of the nearby hotels.
*Barton Springs Pool: a huge natural pool inside the Zilker Metropolitan Park. It is an excellent place to spend those hot summer afternoons. It has different depths and is surrounded by spectacular green areas. The entrance fee is $8 for adults and $4 for children. It opens every day from May to September with the exception of Thursdays, which are cleaning days, since it is also home to different species of animals, including an endemic salamander in the region.
*South Congress District: It is one of the most popular neighborhoods to have fun in the city. It has a wide variety of art galleries, coffee shops, bars, microbreweries, as well as a large number of very old and historic houses. Without a doubt if you want to go out for a fun night, this is one of the best places in Austin. Special events are held on the first Thursday of each month in many of these restaurants, bars and coffee shops where, in addition to opening earlier and closing later, they also have special discounts and live music events. Now, if you like to have fun with young university students, you should not miss the 6th street, since here the party is found every day of the week; here you can find a variety of live concerts, comedy shows and much more.
*Circuit of The Americas: headquarters of the Formula 1. If you are a car-racing lover directly from Formula 1 you cannot miss the opportunity to enjoy them live and in full color, with its 5,513 meters of extension. In addition to Formula 1, different races have been announced to be held in this complex such as the MotoGP as part of the Grand Prix of the Americas of Motorcycling among others.

Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de una ciudad de EE.UU. que es capital de un estado que fue parte de México hasta 1845 cuando pasó a ser uno más de los 50 estados pertenecientes al país. Nos referimos a Austin, Texas. La ciudad fue fundada en el año de 1838 con el nombre de Waterloo y un año después cambió de nombre en honor a Stephen F. Austin considerado el “padre de Texas”. Cuenta con una población cercana al 1 millón de habitantes mientras que su zona metropolitana, la cual lleva el mismo nombre, tiene una población cercana a los 2 millones de habitantes.
La ciudad funciona como sede del gobierno del estado, pero además es un importante centro comercial, educativo y de convenciones. Sus principales producciones tienen que ver con la tecnología, ya que muchos equipos electrónicos, semiconductores y equipos informáticos son desarrollados en esta ciudad.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Austin tienen un costo promedio de $250 y aunque los puedes encontrar de manera directa la gran mayoría tienen 1 escala. La mejor forma de moverse en Austin es rentando un vehículo. La ciudad cuenta con servicio de autobuses que salen cada 15 minutos y que te pueden llevar algunos de los puntos más importantes entre ellos el aeropuerto pero son pocas las líneas y los sitios por los que pasan. El servicio de taxis también es una buena opción para moverse si no pretendes manejar en tu viaje. El hospedaje en un hotel 3 estrellas es un poco más elevado del promedio pero la calidad de los hoteles lo compensa teniendo como costo promedio $80 por noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas por $150 la noche. En cuanto a la gastronomía nos referimos, Austin es muy popular como la mayor parte de las ciudades texanas, por sus excelentes cortes de carne ya que cuentan con ganado de la mejor calidad en el país, además de que el sumamente adaptado estilo Tex-Mex (mezcla de comida texana con comida mexicana) hacen de esta ciudad un lugar exquisito para disfrutar de unos buenos filetes. El costo promedio de una comida es de $17.
Los lugares y/o actividades que no deberás perder en tu próxima visita a Austin son los siguientes:
*Capitolio: uno de los más grandes del país. Se encuentra en pleno centro de la ciudad. Fue construido en el año 1888 y es de estilo neo renacentista. Cuenta con una enorme cúpula que en su parte más alta tiene una estatua de la Diosa de la Libertad. En su interior podrás encontrar diversas exposiciones que te ayudarán a sumergirte en la historia de Texas a lo largo de varios cientos de años; cuenta con una sala de cine, tienda de recuerdos, una cafetería y mucho más. Además si decides tomar un tour puedes conocer los hermosos y grandes jardines que la rodean así como la hermosa mansión del Gobernador. Sin lugar a dudas es un sitio excelente para unas buenas fotografías estilo postal. Los recorridos son gratuitos pero debes reservarlos con anticipación vía telefónica.
*Espectáculo de murciélagos: un espectáculo natural que se da entre los meses de abril y octubre. Se trata de los murciélagos del “Puente del Congreso”, los cuales viven debajo de él y entre las 7 pm y 9 pm forman una enorme nube de más de un millón de murciélagos cola de ratón que salen a buscar comida. Puedes avistar este curioso suceso desde la banqueta, algún bote o kayak, o bien desde alguno de los hoteles cercanos.
*Barton Springs Pool: una enorme piscina natural dentro del Parque Metropolitano Zilker. Es un excelente lugar para pasar esas tardes calurosas de verano. Cuenta con distintas profundidades y está rodeada de espectaculares zonas verdes. El costo de entrada es de $8 adultos y $4 niños. Abre todos los días de mayo a septiembre con excepción de los jueves que se hace limpieza de la misma ya que además es hogar de distintas especies de animales, entre ellas una salamandra endémica de la región.
*Distrito de South Congress: es uno de los barrios más populares para salir a divertirse en la ciudad. Cuenta con una gran variedad de galerías de arte, cafeterías, bares, microcervecerías, además de una gran cantidad de casas muy antiguas e históricas. Sin lugar a dudas si quieres salir a divertirte de noche este es uno de los mejores sitios en Austin. El primer jueves de cada mes se hacen eventos especiales en muchos de estos restaurantes, bares y cafeterías en donde, además de abrir más temprano y cerrar más tarde, cuentan con descuentos especiales y eventos de música en vivo. Ahora que si te gusta divertirte con los jóvenes universitarios no deberás dejar de visitar la calle sexta, ya que aquí la fiesta la encuentras todos los días de la semana; aquí podrás encontrar gran variedad de conciertos en vivo, shows de comedia y mucho más.
*Circuito de las Américas: la sede de la Fórmula 1 en el país. Si eres amante de las carreras de autos directamente de la Fórmula 1 no podrás perder la oportunidad de disfrutarlas en vivo y a todo color, con sus 5,513 metros de extensión. Además de la Fórmula 1 se han anunciado distintas carreras a realizarse en este complejo como el MotoGP como parte del Gran Premio de las Américas de Motociclismo entre otros.
