Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about the capital of a country in Eastern Europe, known for a long time as “the little Paris of the east.” We talk about Bucharest, Romania. Its foundation is unknown, but there are documents that talk about the city since 1459. It has more than 2.4 million inhabitants, making it the tenth most populated city in Europe.
The city was known for many years as the Little Paris of the East because when it was ruled by King Charles I, a large number of French architects were hired who did the job of giving it that magnificent similarity. Unfortunately, a big part of these buildings were destroyed in the socialist era of Nicolae Ceausescu. Approximately a fifth part of the city was changed to look like a new socialist city.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Bucharest have an average cost of $900 and have at least two stops. The best way to get around Bucharest is by foot. The historic downtown has an approximate length of 6 km so it won’t be so complicated to travel by foot. In case of wanting to move to other distant points of the city, the metro is a very good option and you can buy packages for 2 or 10 rides. Being a city with little tourism despite its great beauty, the cost of accommodation is quite low compared to other major European cities. The average cost in a 3-star hotel room is $30 a night and in a 5-star hotel room is $90 a night. As for the cuisine, it is influenced by pork and chicken; be sure to try the great variety of soups that are eaten here: meatball soup, gut soup, bean soup, among others. You should also try the sarmale, which are very similar to spring rolls or burritos; the sarmale are wrapped in cabbage leaves and stuffed with pork, chicken or even beef or lamb. For dessert, try a papanasi, which is a small donut-shaped cake with a small sphere on top, it is eaten hot and with a sour cream very similar to natural yogurt. The average cost of a meal is $8 so it is also very cheap to eat in this city.
The places you should not miss during your next visit to Bucharest are the following:
*Palace of the Parliament of Romania: considered the largest civil administrative building in the world. But it not only has that record since it also has the record of the most expensive administrative building in the world and the heaviest too, in addition to being the second largest building in the world just behind the U.S. Pentagon. It has 20 floors in total, 8 of them underground. You can visit it inside as there are tours, but you have to make your reservation in advance. To build this Palace it was necessary to demolish more than 7,000 houses, 12 churches, 2 synagogues and 3 monasteries, all of it from the historic center of the city. Just in front of the Palace of Parliament is the Unity Boulevard, which is completely surrounded by leafy trees and to be created, they had to demolish 9,000 houses in the historic center.
* Arcul de Triumf (Triumphal Arch): with broad similarity to that of Paris. This beautiful arch, although much smaller than that of Paris, has a great similarity and was made in honor of the national heroes of the War of Independence and also of the First World War. Nearby is Calea Victoriei Avenue where some of the old buildings of the time when it was considered the Paris of the East are located. Here you can find some of the many historical museums of the city.
*Roman Athenaeum: it is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most majestic buildings in all of Bucharest. It has a similarity to the ancient Greek temples, with a dome over 40 meters high and which has a large number of marble balconies, gold laminates and large spiral stairs. In addition to enjoying the beauty and history of this building, you can enjoy one of the beautiful concerts of the George Enescu Romanian Philharmonic, as they are based here. The entrance fee to this type of concert is $6, which makes it extremely accessible to all budgets.
*City parks: take advantage to enjoy the green areas that surround the entire city. In several of the parks that surround the city are open-air theaters where you can enjoy concerts, dances, plays and much more. In addition to that in some of them you can rent boats to ride in its lakes.
*Carturesti Carusel: considered one of the most beautiful bookshops worldwide. It is located in a beautiful and restored 19th century building. It has a beautiful minimalist design, where the play of lights that enter through the central skylight make you really sit inside a carousel. This building is divided into 6 floors, in 2 of them cultural events and concerts are held, in addition to one of its floors has a beautiful cafeteria with an excellent view of the city. Without a doubt if you are a fan of reading like I am this visit will be like going to Disneyland for the first time.
The national currency is the Romanian Leu (RON) and it is very convenient to have cash in the national currency since in many establishments credit or debit cards are not accepted. Nor are dollars and euros accepted in many places.

Conoce Bucarestn
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la capital de un país de Europa del Este, conocida por mucho tiempo como “La pequeña París del Este”. Nos referimos a Bucarest, Rumania. La fundación de la ciudad es del todo incierta, pero se tienen documentos que hablan de ella desde el año 1459. Cuenta con más de 2 millones 400 mil habitantes, haciéndola la décima ciudad más poblada de Europa.
La ciudad fue conocida por muchos años como la Pequeña París del Este debido a que cuando fue gobernada por el Rey Carlos I se contrataron a una gran cantidad de arquitectos franceses que hicieron la labor de darle esa magnífica similitud. Desgraciadamente gran parte de estas edificaciones fueron derrumbadas en la época socialista de Nicolae Ceausescu. Aproximadamente 1/5 parte de la ciudad fue cambiada para dar aspecto de una nueva ciudad socialista.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Bucarest tienen un costo promedio de $900 y cuentan con al menos dos escalas. La mejor forma de moverse dentro de Bucarest es a pie. El casco histórico tiene un largo de aproximadamente 6 km por lo que no será tan complicado poderlo recorrer a pie. En dado caso de querer mover a otros puntos lejanos de la ciudad el metro es una muy buena opción y se venden paquetes para 2 usos o 10 usos. Al ser una ciudad con poco turismo a pesar de su gran belleza, el costo del hospedaje es bastante bajo a comparación de otras ciudades importantes europeas. El costo promedio en una habitación 3 estrellas es de $30 la noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas es de $90 la noche. En cuanto a la gastronomía de la ciudad está influenciada por la carne de cerdo y por el pollo, no dejes de probar la gran variedad de sopas que aquí se comen: sopa de albóndigas, la sopa de tripas, la sopa de judías entre otras. También deberás probar los sarmale que son muy similares a los rollos primavera o los burritos; los sarmale son envueltos en hojas de col y rellenos de carne de cerdo, pollo o incluso res o cordero. Como postre, pruebe un papanasi, el cual es un pequeño pastel en forma de dona con una pequeña esfera en la parte superior, este se come caliente y con una crema agria muy similar al yogurt natural. El costo promedio de una comida es de $8 por lo que es también muy económico comer en esta ciudad.
Los puntos que no deberás perderte en tu próxima visita por Bucarest son los siguientes:
*Palacio del Parlamento Rumano: considerado el edificio administrativo civil más grande del mundo. Pero no solo tiene ese récord ya que también tiene el récord del edificio administrativo más caro en el mundo y el más pesado también, además de ser el segundo edificio más grande del mundo sólo por detrás del Pentágono de EE.UU. Cuenta con 20 plantas en total, 8 de ellas son subterráneas. Puedes visitarlo en su interior ya que incluso hay recorridos, pero tienes que hacer tu reservación con antelación. Para construir este Palacio fue necesario derribar más de 7 mil casas, 12 iglesias, 2 sinagogas y 3 monasterios, todo ello del casco histórico de la ciudad. Justo enfrente del Palacio del Parlamento se encuentra el Bulevar de la Unidad, el cual está completamente rodeado de frondosos árboles y que para ser creado también tuvieron que ser demolidas cerca de 9 mil casas del casco histórico.
*Arco del Triunfo: con amplia similitud con el de París. Este hermoso arco, aunque es mucho más pequeño que el de París, tiene una gran similitud y fue hecho en honor a los héroes nacionales de la Guerra de la Independencia y también de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En las cercanías se encuentra la avenida Calea Victoriei en donde se encuentran también algunos de los antiguos edificios de la época en la que fue considerada la París del Este; aquí podrás encontrar algunos de los muchos museos históricos de la ciudad.
*Ateneo Romano: es sin duda uno de los edificios más viejos y majestuosos de todo Bucarest. Tiene una similitud con los antiguos templos griegos, con una cúpula de más de 40 metros de altura y que cuenta en su interior con una gran cantidad de balcones de mármol, laminados de oro y unas amplias escaleras en espiral. Además de disfrutar de la belleza e historia de este edificio, podrás disfrutar de uno de los hermosos conciertos de la Filarmónica Rumana George Enescu, ya que aquí tienen su sede. El costo de entrada a este tipo de conciertos es de $6, lo cual lo hace sumamente accesible a todos los bolsillos.
*Parques de la ciudad: aprovecha para disfrutar de las áreas verdes que rodean a toda la ciudad. En varios de los parques que rodean la ciudad se encuentran teatros al aire libre en donde podrás disfrutar de conciertos, bailes, obras de teatro y mucho más. Además de que en algunos de ellos podrás rentar botes para pasear en sus lagos.
*Carturesti Carusel: considerada una de las librerías más hermosas en todo el mundo. Se encuentra en un hermoso y restaurado edificio del siglo XIX. Tiene un hermoso diseño minimalista, en donde el juego de luces que entran por la claraboya central hacen que realmente te sientas dentro de un carrusel. Este edificio está dividido en 6 plantas, en 2 de ellas se realizan eventos culturales y conciertos, además de que en uno de sus pisos cuenta con una bella cafetería con una excelente vista de la ciudad. Sin duda si eres un fanático de la lectura como tu servidor esta visita será como ir a Disneyland por primera ocasión.
La moneda nacional rumana es el Leu Rumano (RON) y es muy conveniente tener efectivo en la moneda nacional ya que en muchos establecimientos no son aceptadas las tarjetas de crédito o débito. Tampoco son muy aceptados los dólares y euros en muchos sitios.
