Middle school partners with SprayKC to paint mural

By Chara
SprayKC, a local arts organization, and Guadalupe Centers Middle School have partnered to bring a Latin-themed mural to the school.
According to Rodrigo Alvarez, an artist who worked on the indoor mural, it was a collaborative effort between Spray KC and the Kansas City, Missouri-based school.
“SprayKC is frequently collaborating with artists to promote local art in the community,” Alvarez said.
The collaboration started when a teacher reached out to Spray KC. Then, all the artists talked with students to find out what they wanted to see depicted.
“The students already had studied murals and graffiti, and they talked to us about their vision and what they were thinking could impact future generations,” Alvarez said. “They shared with all the artists their interests, the meaning of the community for them and their vision of art.”
The mural was painted during spring break.
For Alvarez and the rest of the artists, who included Warren Harvey, Chico Sierra and Katie Lee, it was impressive to learn what the students wanted.
“It is always very exciting when we (artists) work with students,” Alvarez said. “At some point, we were those students, too, and we thought about the excitement we would have if we had the opportunity to be exposed to art as they … (are).”
The mural depicts three famous Latin American figures: Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi and indigenous Mexican runner Lorena Ramirez.
“At Guadalupe Centers Middle School, more than 90 percent of its student population is Hispanic, and we really wanted to paint people who were important to them,” Alvarez said. “We are very proud to use our passion for art to give back to the community.”
