The National Recording Registry has officially added Juan Gabriel’s 1990 recording of the song “Amor Eterno” to its list of sound recordings preserved for their artistic, cultural and/or historical significance, multiple media outlets have reported.
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden made the announcement on April 16. The recording is part of this year’s class of inductees. Other artists with music being added to the list include the Swedish pop ensemble ABBA, the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. and the American rock band Green Day.
Ivan Gabriel Aguilera, the son of Juan Gabriel, expressed his family’s honor and pride about “Amor Eterno” being included.
“I believe that future generations – that’s what he always wanted – that they (will) see his music and make it relatable to their lives as well,” the son said, as quoted by multiple media outlets. “He would always say that ‘as long as the public, the people, keep singing my music, Juan Gabriel will never die’ and it’s nice to see that happening here.”
“Amor Eterno” was written as a tribute to Juan Gabriel’s mother, who passed away in 1974. The song has become an enduring symbol of loss and love within the Mexican community. Its lyrics, which refer to Acapulco as the site of the singer’s saddest memory, and its mariachi arrangement have made it a staple for moments of mourning and remembrance.
“Amor Eterno” and this year’s other entries put the total number of recordings in the National Recording Registry at 600, according to the Library of Congress website and other sources. There are 25 recordings chosen per year, Library of Congress information states.

El Registro Nacional de Grabaciones ha añadido oficialmente la grabación de 1990 de la canción “Amor Eterno” de Juan Gabriel a su lista de grabaciones sonoras preservadas por su significado artístico, cultural y/o histórico, han informado múltiples medios de comunicación.
La Bibliotecaria del Congreso, Carla Hayden, hizo el anuncio el 16 de abril. La grabación es parte de la clase de este año de incorporaciones. Otros artistas con música que se añade a la lista incluyen al conjunto pop sueco ABBA, al difunto rapero Notorious B.I.G. y a la banda de rock estadounidense Green Day.
Iván Gabriel Aguilera, hijo de Juan Gabriel, expresó el honor y el orgullo de su familia por la inclusión de “Amor Eterno”.
“Las generaciones en el futuro, eso es lo que él siempre quiso, que vean su música y que se le aplique a su vida también”, dijo el hijo, citado por múltiples medios de comunicación. Había algo que él siempre decía, que ‘mientras el público, la gente, siga cantando mi música, Juan Gabriel nunca va a morir’, y es bonito ver eso está pasando aquí”.
“Amor Eterno” fue escrita como un homenaje a la madre de Juan Gabriel, quien falleció en 1974. La canción se ha convertido en un símbolo perdurable de pérdida y amor dentro de la comunidad mexicana. Sus letras, que mencionan a Acapulco como el sitio de su memoria más triste, y su arreglo de mariachi, la han convertido en un elemento básico para momentos de luto y recuerdo.
“Amor Eterno” y las otras canciones de este año ponen el total de grabaciones en el Registro Nacional de Grabaciones en 600, según el sitio web de la Biblioteca del Congreso y otras fuentes. Se eligen 25 grabaciones por año, según información de la Biblioteca del Congreso.
